The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is the most widely adopted framework for implementing Agile at enterprise scale.
- SAFe adds portfolio, program, and team layers to standard Agile
- Program Increments are the heartbeat: 8-12 week coordinated planning cycles
- The Agile Release Train is SAFe's core construct: a team of teams
The four SAFe configurations
Essential, Large Solution, Portfolio, and Full SAFe. Most organizations start with Essential and expand as Agile maturity grows.
The Agile Release Train
The ART is a cross-functional team of 50-125 people aligned around a shared product, operating on a shared cadence and synchronizing every Program Increment.
Program Increment Planning
PI Planning is a two-day event where all ART teams plan together for 8-12 weeks, identifying dependencies and creating a coordinated program board.
When SAFe is right
Appropriate when you have 5+ teams on the same product and enterprise governance requires portfolio-level visibility. Overkill for 1-3 teams.
Frequently asked questions
Most widely adopted but not universally best. LeSS and Nexus are lighter alternatives.
SAFe Agilist (SA) is foundational. SPC and RTE are advanced credentials.
Basic implementation for one ART takes 6-12 months; full transformation 2-3 years.
